Did you know that dominoes are a tile-based game? These rectangular tiles with square ends are shaped like dominoes. Each end has a corresponding number of spots. Players must match pairs of tiles of the same color and the goal is to eliminate all the tiles in the game before they reach the last spot. The first player to reach a total of 20 points wins. If he or she wins all the games, he or she wins.
Chinese dominoes
The history of Chinese dominoes is not fully known, but there is evidence that the game has existed for thousands of years. European travelers to Asia recorded their encounters with the game during the Renaissance. Even though the game’s origins are unclear, dominoes have been around for centuries in Asia and have remained popular throughout the world. Andrew Lo believes that the first extant manual on the game is written by Qu You, who wrote “Xuanhe paipu” sometime between 1119 and 1125. Another source for its use is Xie Zhaozhe (1567-1624) who mentions a legend about the invention of dominoes in 1112. Thus, Chinese dominoes had been around long before the early 15th century.
While the origins of Chinese dominoes are unclear, the game’s popularity is based on the Chinese laborers who played the game in China. According to the popular Chinese romance Sam Kwok chi, Hung Ming invented the game to entertain soldiers while on night watches. The game was also credited to Keung t’ai Kung, who invented the game to keep his soldiers awake while serving in battle. Meanwhile, some other sources say the game was invented by a Chinese physician, Fan Lai, whose picture appears in Thug chau lit kwok.
European-style dominoes
The game of dominoes is an ancient board game that originated in France and Italy in the early 18th century and was brought to England by French prisoners of war. In the European-style variant, the object of the game is to create an enclosed space, or ‘cell,’ in which your dominoes land. The first person to call all his dominoes ‘rocks’ forfeits all his pips, but the other players’ tiles still score.
European-style dominoes have different materials than their Chinese counterparts. Traditionally, domino tiles are made of ivory, silver lip oyster shell, or wood, with white pips. Modern European-style dominoes are made from marble, granite, or soapstone. A game of dominoes can be played with two or more players, who alternate taking turns on a given tile. There are also several different ways to play this ancient game.
Variations of the draw game
There are many variations of the draw game in domino. In some variants, the draw tile must be attached to the last double tile. Another variant is known as the Hector’s Rules, which allows a player to double his tile and get bonus play if his opponent does the same. In most cases, players will earn points during game play using variations of the draw game. For example, a player who is unable to play a tile must draw an extra tile.
Another variation of the draw game is known as Muggins. In this game, the player scores two points if the total pip count is less than five. Doubles are also used to spin the tiles. A player can also score points by clearing his hand or winning a blocked game. Alternatively, doubles can also be used as spinners. These variations of the draw game are common in domino tournaments.
Rules of the game
The Rules of Domino are simple: Each player must lay a tile on the open ends of their domino layout. The tile must connect with pips of the same number. In this way, a player scores when all the pips on their open ends equal a multiple of five. If a player does not score a tile before the game ends, he loses. Afterwards, he has to draw another tile.
The objective of the game is to create enclosed spaces, or ‘cells’. Each cell contains half of the domino tiles. Every cell scored one point. See examples of cell creation in a graphic illustration below. This illustration will help you learn some of the tactics used to play Game Option 1.
